  • Big Brother contestant says he will clean up politics

Former Big Brother contestant Mikey Hughes is pledging to clean up politics following the Westminster expenses scandal.

The Glasgow-based radio presenter, who is blind, confirmed that he is standing as an independent candidate in the Glasgow North East by-election.

He said: "People have voted for me in the past, they have dug into their pockets, I was the runner up in Big Brother, one of the closest finals in Big Brother history, 5.5million was bet on me at the bookies to win Big Brother, and one of my slogans is 'It's time to vote for Mikey again and this time we will make sure he wins."

He thinks that the main constituency issue is crime, and revealed he was recently the victim of an attempted robbery while he was collecting for charity.

He said: "I was out and about collecting money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

"Believe it or not, two people tried to rob my charity box, it was really fortunate at the time that I hadn't even started collecting and they were hanging about and I had to get a member of the store to help me out and get me back hiome safely on the bus."

So I want to crack down on crime, that is one of the big concerns iin the local area."

The by-election is being held because Speaker Michael Martin announced he intended to stand down following the expenses row.
