  • Green-minded locals fight council over development plans

The west end of Glasgow is bearing witness to a green revolution as locals battle the council over plans to build on a meadow.

Residents are angry that Glasgow City Council wants to allow developers to erect more than 100 flats in their dear green place.

Green-fingered locals reclaimed the area a year ago and set about cleaning up the litter and vandalism.
They turned the patch into an allotment for growing fruit and vegetables.

Douglas Peacock, from the North Kelvin Meadow Campaign, told STV News: What we find is, as people come off their sofas rather than write objection letters to the council and actually do something, they get to know their neighbour.

We talk a lot about that but this is a good example. This is actually happening. Theyre really proud now; theyve got a community and theyre talking to each other.

Green MSP Patrick Harvie is backing the locals in their resistance to the councils proposals. He said: This is an example of a piece of land that was given. Its never been built on. Its been a public green space and the community here want it to stay a public green space.

Its theirs; its not just an item in a commercial property portfolio and we dont want it treated that way.

Developers are finding it increasingly difficult to secure land to build on. But the campaigners insist they will have to look elsewhere, as their community meadow will be staying green.
