  • Proposed Shetland wind farm comes under fire

It's taken over five years, but plans to create Europe's largest onshore wind farm in Shetland have finally been submitted to Scottish ministers.

The project is a joint venture between Shetland Charitable Trust and Scottish and Southern Energy.

They plan to build 150 turbines with the potential to power 20 percent of Scotlands electricity needs.

The developers behind the project say it could yield vast profits for the island - an estimated 37 million pounds a year.

But the project is not without objectors - more than 2,500 people have signed a petition against the proposed development.

They say the project is simply too big and could damage the environment.
