Say aye tae McPhies
The McPhies bakery has been producing baked products for over 35 years and this family business shows no signs of slowing down.
First opened in 1973 by Jim McPhie, the bakery was initially bought to be managed from afar; but it wasn’t long before Jim rolled up his sleeves and let the flour fly.
Formally joining the business in 1985, although it seemed that his initiation into the world of baking began in his pre-primary school days, Craig made it a family affair; eventually becoming a fully fledged partner in the company.
And it is this enduring relationship between father and son that has made McPhies the success story it is today.
“It’s great working with my dad. I hear a lot of horror stories out there, people saying that they could never work with their dad…but we’ve never had any problems at all.”
“Working with my son is a terrific honour. You couldn’t get a bigger compliment than your own son wanting to do what you do.”
The McPhies bakery has earned its reputation for making a range delicious food; in the process winning a coveted World Scotch Pie Gold Medal, as well top recommendations in Scottish food guides and the City Council hygiene award.
Throughout this the family business has survived more than one economic slump and Jim is certain they will be able to outlast a few more yet.
“We’ve weathered recessions I didn’t even know we were in. You’re kept so busy, from day to day, producing the products that suddenly it has been and gone.”
McPhies Craft Bakers hark back to a simpler, more honest time. A time before Greggs took a stranglehold on our high streets. They recall when a Subway was something you travelled on, not something you ate.
They pride themselves on using fresh, wholesome ingredients and couple this with a genuine passion for their products. They have knowledge of their local community, a commitment to their customers and a desire to innovate without compromising these ethics.
With a new branch of the business, a mobile bakery, already brightening up people’s day across Glasgow, everybody will still be saying “aye tae McPhies” for some time to come. -
