  • Attadale Gardens, Strathcarron

The 30,000-acre Attadale Estate on the west coast of Scotland near Strathcarron lies just across the water from Skye, with wonderful hill-and-loch scenery all around. The estate gardens (first created in the late nineteenth century) are a wonder to behold, with the water gardens being owner Nicky Macpherson's particular pride and joy. These were designed as a way of drawing attention away from 2,000 trees that fell in a big storm in 1980 and which took five years to clear.

Plants include skunk cabbage, enormous yellow lilies, and various types of gunnera: tiny ones from the land around the Strait of Magellan, huge ones from Brazil, with leaves six feet across.

The oldest part of the garden has been cut and designed to repeat the shapes of the surrounding hills, and there are contrasts of purple and green. Some of the shrubs have been subjected to cloud pruning, a Japanese technique intended to induce a feeling of peace. The view from the garden, however, is to the Applecross hills rather than to Mount Fuji.
